Overcoming Anxiety

October 12, 2017

Anxiety has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I had my first panic attack around the age 11, and hundreds more after that. This past summer I experienced the weight and bondage of anxiety be lifted off my shoulders, and I hope the same will happen to those who read this.

A pastor once told me that anxiety is simply listening to the lies Satan whispers to you over what God is saying. And when you think about it, it is a very true and profound statement. We try to make anxiety seem like a disease but in reality almost everyone deals with some form of anxiety at some point in their life... you are not alone. Even the disciples who were considered to be righteous men dealt with anxiety. For example when Jesus calmed the storm or when Jesus walked on water.  These men who were considered to be Jesus's closest friends didn't even trust him, and they were anxious even when the God of the universe was standing right there with them.

Philippians 4:6-7 says "do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."  In verse 7 of chapter 4 it says that the peace of God will guard our minds and our hearts through Christ Jesus. Notice how Paul uses the word guards. This is because Paul recognizes that anxiety is a direct attack from Satan on our minds. Just like fear and stress. But there is a way to protect ourselves from this attack. In verse 6 it tells us to present our requests to God through prayer and petition with thanksgiving. Its that simple. Whenever we feel worry or anxious all we have to do is talk to God. Anxiety is a toxic and destructive mentality and God wants to take it away from us. A lot of the time we view God as this big dictator in the sky, who's judging our every move. God is our father and he wants to hear our fears and our problems. He longs to be there for you.

Matthew 6:25 says "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothes."

We live in a materialistic world. And thats just a fact. People are more concerned about getting the next new iPhone or buying the latest trends rather than think about where they're going to go when there time on this earth comes to an end. The Bible specifically tells us that these things are not important issues in life. And yet we worry so much about them. We stress about our grades in school, and how were going to pay our bills, shouldn't we understand that God has it all worked out. EVERYTHING that happens in our crazy lives are part of Gods plan for us and your life will be much more enjoyable if you accept and believe that.

Matthew 6:27 says "Can any one of you add a single hour to your life by worrying"

Think about all the time you waste worrying. I know I've spent several hours a day in the past worrying about things that were going on in my life. Especially things that were out of my control. There is so much I could have done in that time. Worrying over things that  you can't control is the most useless thing you can ever do with your time. In the moment we don't always realize that. But we should start becoming aware aware when we get anxious thoughts and fight them! Because when we have Jesus we can win!

We often expect the worst possible situation when God wants the best for us. He is our biggest cheerleader and when we trust him, we have nothing to worry about.
